Interior Designer VS Interior Decorator

by : Sharifa Alaydroos

Having worked in this field for almost 8 years , and I sometimes met client that failed to understand the differences between An interior designer and an Interior decorator. In my perspective , as an interior designer myself, being an interior designer means carrying extended resposibilities from the architects, yes some architects (I can say most of them), are capable designing as great as interior designers, even many better than us.

So how can client define is Interior designer and Interior decorator the same?, my answer is going to be No!, we are not the same, Interior designer is an expertise that has passed specific schooling and formal training. The work involved usually includes studying color and fabric, computer-aided design (CAD) training, drawing, space planning, furniture design, architecture and more.

Interior designers are able to manage spatial planning, technical solutions, and can help design also renovate interiors, they develop the drawing from initial floor plans to placing the last decorative accent. They focus more into the fuction of its space without ignoring the beauty of its look. Interior designers often work closely with architects and contractors to help achieve the look the client desires, whether that client is designing a residential home, an office, a hotel, or any other interior space.

While Interior decorator means, An expertise that can be relied on their aesthetic talent or capability in decorating spaces, well Interior decorators don't need to have formal training or schooling because decorators focus primarily on aesthetics. Why?, because Decorators don't generally take part in renovations or structural planning. They come in after that part is complete and focus on the surface look of the space. Although decorators are practically not required to have formal education degree, but there are some courses available to join, these are often focus on color and fabric, room layouts, space planning, furniture styles and more.

On the otherside, the decorator can help clients project that doesnt work directly with structural and technical development, they tend to handle and decide on a style, choose a color scheme, purchase furniture, and accessorize. They're often brought in to spruce up an existing space that needs to be updated or redone.

When it comes to hire the perfect expert for your project, I can personally suggest you, to find the initial of your project scope of work, to be in safe side, Designers are capable of handling all your inquiry when it comes to full technical matters, (such as removing a wall, moving plumbing around, or adding new windows or doors) no doubt! , but if your scope of works dont require a technical issue, but you need help deciding on a style; choosing wallpaper, paint, and furnishings; picking window treatments, and choosing lighting and accessories, you can hire decorator, they know what works together and can transform a room to suit the clients' needs and desires, without doing any technical work.

Both interior designers and interior decorators create beautiful and functional spaces, but they are separate professions. Sharpen your needs to find out which one best to hire to save time and cost.
